Sacramento authorities are examining a gun violence incident that erupted Saturday night April 18 at the Howe Community Park area while law enforcement were dispersing a large unauthorized gathering of a crowd of several hundred.
What Led to the Shooting
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies first arrived at the park on Howe Avenue shortly before half past six in the evening after receiving reports of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. After that, another report was received mentioning a possible fight taking place within the park grounds.
A sheriff's airship flew over the park but could not confirm any ongoing fight. However, it became clear that several hundred individuals had assembled at the park without authorization.
The Shooting Itself
Deputies started clearing the unauthorized gathering by forming a perimeter and using their vehicle PA systems instructing those gathered to disperse at once. About 15 minutes were allowed for individuals to vacate.
As the crowd was being cleared that 20 to 25 gunshots rang out. The rapid succession of shots sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Deputies wasted no time in locating gunshot victims.
The Shooting Victims
When the dust settled, four people were identified as having gunshot wounds. Those injured — including a female and three males each apparently in their early to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Hospital staff reported that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one victim's wounds were minor. According to authorities, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department assisted at the location and provided medical assistance those with gunshot wounds before they were taken to the hospital.

The bulk of the shooting was believed to have unfolded near the Cottage Way corridor near the Home Depot on the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Law enforcement investigators located more spent casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Bullet damage were noted in the iron fence alongside the nearby Home Depot. This evidence showed that one of the gunmen had been firing southward from along Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot. The nearby Home Depot was locked down while the scene was active. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives kept processing evidence throughout the night.
Suspects Detained
Information obtained over scanner radio traffic indicated that a Kia vehicle had been detained in nearby Solano County. Four detainees were stopped and detained. Deputies were sent to retrieve the detainees to bring the suspects back for further questioning. Footage analyzed by investigators showed that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
